4 Ways to Speed Up Your Vivaldi Browser

Vivaldi is one of the most customizable browsers out there, but that flexibility can sometimes come at a cost: speed. If your Vivaldi setup is starting to lag or feel sluggish, don’t worry. A few smart tweaks can get it running smoother and faster. Here are four easy ways to speed up your Vivaldi browser without giving up the features you love.

1. Trim Down Extensions

Extensions can be useful, but they also eat up memory and CPU. The more you’ve got running in the background, the more your browser has to juggle.

What to do:

  • Go to Vivaldi Menu > Tools > Extensions.
  • Disable or remove anything you don’t actually use.
  • Keep only the essentials—especially those you trust and that are regularly updated.

2. Tame Your Tabs

Vivaldi is a tab-lover’s dream, but too many open tabs can tank performance fast.

Tips:

  • Use the Hibernate Tabs feature. Right-click a tab or tab stack and choose Hibernate Background Tabs to unload them from memory.
  • Try Tab Stacks or Workspaces to organize your open tabs and reduce clutter.
  • Enable Lazy Load Tabs on startup: Settings > General > Startup with > Last Session and check “Lazy Load Restored Tabs.”

3. Streamline Your Settings

Vivaldi’s deep customization is a double-edged sword. Some features, if overused, can bog things down.

Smart adjustments:

  • Disable unnecessary animations: Settings > Appearance > Use Animation – turn this off.
  • Limit thumbnail generation for tabs: Settings > Tabs > Tab Display > Show Tab Thumbnails – turn off if you don’t need visual previews.
  • Avoid too many web panels—each one runs like a mini browser window.

4. Clear the Clutter

Old cache files, bloated history, and saved site data can all slow down performance over time.

How to clean up:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy > Clear Browsing Data.
  • Select “Cached Images and Files” and “Cookies,” then clear for “All Time.”
  • Also, consider turning off unnecessary trackers and ad blocking options if you use an external blocker already.

Bonus Tip: Keep Vivaldi updated. Each version includes performance tweaks, bug fixes, and improvements. Updates are your browser’s best friend.

Vivaldi is powerful by design. With a little maintenance and smarter settings, you can enjoy both speed and customization—no tradeoffs required.
