3 Ways To Disable Proxy Settings In Windows 10
Proxy settings can sometimes get in the way—especially when you’re dealing with internet issues, slow connections, or software that won’t connect. If you suspect a proxy is messing with your network, it’s time to shut it down. Here are three straightforward ways to disable proxy settings in Windows 10.
1. Turn Off Proxy from Windows Settings
This is the easiest method and works for most users.
Steps:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Network & Internet > Proxy.
- Under Manual proxy setup, turn Use a proxy server to Off.
- Make sure Automatically detect settings is On (optional but helpful).
That’s it. No need to restart. Your proxy is disabled.
2. Use Internet Options (Control Panel)
This method taps into the classic Windows tools.
Steps:
- Press Windows + R, type
inetcpl.cpl
, and hit Enter. - In the Internet Properties window, go to the Connections tab.
- Click LAN settings.
- Uncheck Use a proxy server for your LAN.
- Check Automatically detect settings if it isn’t already.
Click OK, then Apply. Done.
3. Disable Proxy via Registry Editor (Advanced Users)
Use this only if the above methods don’t stick—maybe because of a policy or malware.
Warning: Editing the registry can break things. Back it up first.
Steps:
- Press Windows + R, type
regedit
, and press Enter. - Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
- Find and set these values:
- ProxyEnable: double-click it and change the value to
0
. - ProxyServer: double-click and clear out any data.
- ProxyEnable: double-click it and change the value to
Restart your computer to apply the changes.
Final Tip
If your proxy settings keep turning back on, scan for malware or check with your network admin. Some programs—or group policies on company networks—may force proxy settings.
