How to Hide Files on Android Using Google Files App

If you’re looking for a simple way to keep private files out of sight on your Android phone, the Google Files app has you covered. It includes a built-in Safe Folder feature that lets you hide sensitive photos, documents, and videos behind a PIN code. No extra apps. No root access. Just a few taps.

Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Install or Open Google Files

If you don’t already have it:

  • Download Google Files from the Google Play Store.
  • Open the app and grant the necessary permissions.

Step 2: Set Up the Safe Folder

  1. Open the Files app.
  2. Tap Browse at the bottom.
  3. Scroll down and tap Safe Folder.
  4. Set a 4-digit PIN. Make sure you remember it—there’s no way to recover your files if you forget the PIN.

Step 3: Move Files to the Safe Folder

To hide files:

  1. Browse your phone’s storage in the Files app.
  2. Long-press on the file(s) you want to hide.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu or the Move to Safe Folder option.
  4. Enter your PIN when prompted.

The selected files are now hidden from regular file browsing and only accessible through the Safe Folder.

Step 4: Access or Remove Files Later

To view or take files out of the Safe Folder:

  1. Open the Files app.
  2. Enter your PIN to unlock the Safe Folder.
  3. Long-press the file and tap Move out of Safe Folder if you want to unhide it.

Quick Tips

  • The Safe Folder is local to your device. If you uninstall the Files app or reset your phone, you’ll lose the files unless you back them up.
  • If you forget your PIN, there’s no reset option. Your files stay locked.

Final Thoughts

The Safe Folder is a solid, no-frills way to hide personal files without needing third-party apps. It’s perfect for anyone who wants privacy without complexity.
