How to Fix Discord’s Crash Issues

If Discord keeps crashing on you, you’re not alone — and you’re not helpless. Whether it’s freezing mid-call, shutting down at launch, or just acting up randomly, Discord crashes can ruin your flow. Let’s fix that.

1. Update Discord (and Your System)

Start simple. Outdated apps cause issues.

  • On Desktop: Press Ctrl + R while Discord is open to force an update.
  • On Mobile: Go to the App Store or Google Play and check for updates.
  • On PC/Mac: Make sure your OS and graphics drivers are current.

2. Clear Discord Cache

Corrupted cache files are a common crash trigger.

Windows:

  1. Press Win + R, type %appdata%, hit Enter.
  2. Find and delete the Discord folder.

Mac:

  1. Open Finder → Go → Go to Folder.
  2. Enter ~/Library/Application Support/Discord and delete the folder.

This won’t erase your account or servers — just temp files.

3. Disable Hardware Acceleration

Hardware acceleration boosts performance, but it can clash with certain GPUs.

To turn it off:

  • Go to User SettingsAdvanced.
  • Toggle Hardware Acceleration off.
  • Restart Discord.

4. Check for Conflicting Apps

Other programs — especially overlays — can interfere with Discord. Common troublemakers:

  • NVIDIA ShadowPlay
  • Steam Overlay
  • MSI Afterburner
  • Antivirus apps

Try disabling overlays or temporarily turning off your antivirus to test if they’re the cause.

5. Reinstall Discord

If crashes persist:

  1. Uninstall Discord.
  2. Clear the cache (see step 2).
  3. Download the latest version from discord.com.

A clean install often does the trick.

6. Use the Web App (as a Temporary Fix)

If nothing else works and you need Discord urgently, use the web version:
https://discord.com/app

It’s not a fix, but it gets you back in the game while you troubleshoot the desktop or mobile app.

Still Crashing?
If Discord keeps crashing after all this, report the bug to Discord Support. Include details like:

  • Your OS version
  • What triggers the crash (voice chat, screen share, etc.)
  • Screenshots or logs, if available

Final Thought

Most Discord crashes come down to software conflicts or bad cache data — and they’re usually fixable in a few minutes. Follow the steps above, and you should be back chatting, gaming, or working without the crash drama.
