4 Ways to Fix the HYPERVISOR_ERROR Blue Screen on Windows 10 & 11

Blue screen errors are always frustrating, especially when you see a message like HYPERVISOR_ERROR on your Windows 10 or 11 PC. This error usually relates to virtualization features, but it can be triggered by hardware, drivers, or system settings. The good news? You can fix it. Here are four practical ways to resolve the HYPERVISOR_ERROR blue screen.

1. Update Windows and Drivers

Outdated or corrupt system files and drivers often cause hypervisor issues.

What to do:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Click Check for updates and install everything available.
  • Update key drivers, especially for chipset, graphics, and virtualization:
    • Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
    • Right-click each device, choose Update driver, and let Windows search automatically.

Tip: Visit your motherboard or laptop manufacturer’s site for the latest BIOS and drivers, especially if you’re running a virtual machine.

2. Disable or Enable Virtualization in BIOS

The hypervisor relies on virtualization technology. If it’s off or malfunctioning, you’ll get blue screens.

How to check and change:

  1. Restart your PC and enter the BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F2, Del, or Esc during boot).
  2. Look for Intel VT-x, AMD-V, or SVM Mode—the exact name depends on your hardware.
  3. Enable it if it’s disabled, or disable and re-enable it if it’s already on. Save changes and restart.

3. Uninstall Conflicting Software

Some security programs and virtualization tools (like older versions of Hyper-V, VMware, or VirtualBox) can clash and trigger this error.

How to fix:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  • Uninstall any virtualization software you’re not using.
  • Temporarily disable or uninstall third-party antivirus or security tools, then reboot.

Pro tip: If you need these tools, try reinstalling their latest versions after the system is stable.

4. Run System File Checker and DISM

Corrupted system files can cause blue screens. Windows has built-in tools to fix this.

How to run:

  1. Right-click Start, select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Let it finish.
  3. Next, run:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. Restart your PC.

Final Tips

If none of these steps fix the HYPERVISOR_ERROR, check for faulty hardware—especially RAM—or consider a clean Windows reinstall. Most users, though, will get back up and running with these four fixes.
