8 Quick Ways to Open Snipping Tool on Windows

The Snipping Tool is one of Windows’ most useful built-in apps. Whether you need a screenshot for work, school, or just to save something for later, knowing how to open Snipping Tool in a flash makes life easier. Here are 8 fast ways to launch it—pick your favorite and save time every day.

1. Search in the Start Menu

Click the Start button or press the Windows key, then type “Snipping Tool”. Hit Enter when it appears. Simple, quick, and works on any Windows 10 or 11 PC.

2. Use the Keyboard Shortcut (Windows 10/11)

Press Windows key + Shift + S. This opens the Snipping Tool’s “Snip & Sketch” overlay, letting you snip right away. It’s the fastest option if you like keyboard shortcuts.

3. Pin Snipping Tool to Taskbar

Open Snipping Tool once, right-click its icon in the taskbar, and select “Pin to taskbar”. Now it’s always one click away.

4. Create a Desktop Shortcut

Right-click on your desktop, choose New > Shortcut, type snippingtool.exe (or snip & sketch in Windows 11), and give it a name. Double-click anytime you need it.

5. Ask Cortana or Search Bar

Click the microphone icon and say “Open Snipping Tool” or type the same phrase into the Windows search bar. It will launch instantly.

6. Run Dialog Box

Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog. Type snippingtool and hit Enter. Done.

7. Through the Action Center (Windows 11)

Open the Action Center (bottom right of your taskbar), then select Screen snip. This will activate the Snipping Tool overlay for a quick capture.

8. From the Windows Accessories Folder

Click Start > All Programs > Windows Accessories, and you’ll find the Snipping Tool in there. Old school, but always works.

Final Tip

For even faster access, combine a few of these methods. For example, pin it to your taskbar and learn the shortcut key. That way, you’re never more than a click or a key press away from your next screenshot.
