How to set up network file sharing on Windows 10
Need to share files between computers at home or in a small office? Windows 10 makes it straightforward. Here’s how to set up network file sharing step by step.
1. Get Your PCs on the Same Network
Before you start, make sure all the devices you want to share files with are connected to the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. This is crucial—if they’re not on the same network, sharing won’t work.
2. Turn On File and Printer Sharing
- Open Control Panel (type “Control Panel” in the search box).
- Go to Network and Sharing Center.
- Click Change advanced sharing settings on the left.
- Under your current network profile (Private or Guest/Public), make sure the following are checked:
- Turn on network discovery
- Turn on file and printer sharing
- Click Save changes.
3. Choose the Folder You Want to Share
- Right-click the folder you want to share.
- Select Properties.
- Go to the Sharing tab.
- Click Share…
- In the drop-down menu, select Everyone if you want anyone on the network to access the folder, or type specific user names.
- Click Add, then set the permission level (Read or Read/Write).
- Click Share, then Done.
4. Find the Shared Folder from Another PC
On another Windows 10 computer on the same network:
- Open File Explorer.
- Click Network in the left sidebar.
- Find the name of the PC that’s sharing the folder.
- Double-click it to see the shared folders.
5. (Optional) Map the Shared Folder as a Network Drive
If you want quick access, map the shared folder:
- In File Explorer, click This PC.
- Click the Computer tab, then Map network drive.
- Choose a drive letter, then type the folder path (e.g.,
\\ComputerName\SharedFolder
). - Check Reconnect at sign-in if you want it to stick.
- Click Finish.
Quick Tips
- For security, keep your network set to Private, not Public.
- You might need to enter the user name and password of the PC sharing the files.
- Sharing works best between Windows 10 devices. If you’re mixing in older systems or Macs, settings can get tricky.
That’s it! With these steps, you should have network file sharing up and running on Windows 10. Share files, folders, and even printers with ease.
