How to Install Latest Zorin OS in VirtualBox

If you want to try Zorin OS without making changes to your main computer, running it in VirtualBox is the best way. VirtualBox lets you create a virtual machine (VM) that behaves like a real computer, but runs inside your existing operating system.

Follow this step-by-step guide to install the latest Zorin OS in VirtualBox—no Linux experience needed.

What You Need

  • VirtualBox (download from virtualbox.org)
  • Zorin OS ISO file (download the latest version from zorin.com/os/download/)
  • At least 2 GB of RAM (4 GB or more is better)
  • At least 20 GB of free disk space

Step 1: Install VirtualBox

  1. Download VirtualBox for your system (Windows, macOS, or Linux) from the official site.
  2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: Download the Latest Zorin OS ISO

  1. Visit zorin.com/os/download/.
  2. Choose your preferred version (Zorin OS Core is a solid start for most users).
  3. Download the ISO file and save it somewhere easy to find.

Step 3: Create a New Virtual Machine

  1. Open VirtualBox and click “New”.
  2. Name your VM (e.g., “Zorin OS”).
  3. Type: Linux
    Version: Ubuntu (64-bit)
  4. Click Next.

Step 4: Set RAM and Hard Disk

  1. Memory size: Allocate at least 2 GB (2048 MB). If you have enough RAM, use 4096 MB or more.
  2. Hard disk: Select “Create a virtual hard disk now”.
  3. VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) is fine.
  4. Dynamically allocated (saves space).
  5. Set the disk size to 20 GB or more. Need a bigger virtual disk later?

  6. Click Create.

Step 5: Attach the Zorin OS ISO

  1. Select your new VM and click Settings.
  2. Go to the Storage tab.
  3. Under Controller: IDE, click the empty disk icon.
  4. On the right, click the disk icon and choose “Choose a disk file…”.
  5. Find and select the Zorin OS ISO you downloaded.
  6. Click OK.

Step 6: Start the Virtual Machine

  1. Select your Zorin OS VM.
  2. Click Start.
  3. The VM should boot from the ISO and display the Zorin OS installer.

Step 7: Install Zorin OS

  1. Choose “Install Zorin OS”.
  2. Go through the installer steps:
    • Language and Keyboard Layout
    • Updates and Third-Party Software (recommended: check both boxes)
    • Installation Type (choose “Erase disk”—this only affects the virtual hard disk, not your real computer)
    • Time zone
    • Create a username and password
  3. Click Install Now and confirm.
  4. Wait for the installation to finish. When prompted, Restart the VM.

Step 8: Eject the ISO and Boot Zorin OS

  1. After the first restart, you may see the Zorin OS installer again. If so, shut down the VM.
  2. Go to Settings > Storage, select the Zorin OS ISO, and click the remove icon.
  3. Start the VM again. Zorin OS should now boot from the virtual hard drive.

You’re Done!

You now have the latest Zorin OS running in VirtualBox. Explore, test, and customize Zorin OS risk-free.
