How to hide buggy updates on Windows 10

Windows 10 updates can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, they bring security patches and new features. On the other, they sometimes introduce bugs that break more than they fix. If you’ve ever dealt with a buggy update, you know the headache it causes. The good news? You don’t have to live with it. Here’s how you can hide and block problematic Windows 10 updates.

Why Hide Updates?

Microsoft pushes updates automatically, but not all updates play nice with every PC. Sometimes, drivers or patches make things worse. Hiding a buggy update keeps your system stable until Microsoft releases a fix.

The Official Tool: “Show or Hide Updates” Troubleshooter

Microsoft offers a tool called “Show or Hide Updates” troubleshooter (wushowhide). It’s not built into Windows, but you can download it directly from Microsoft.

Steps to Hide an Update:

  1. Download the Tool
  2. Run the Tool
    • Double-click the downloaded file to launch it.
    • Click “Next” and let it scan for updates.
  3. Choose Updates to Hide
    • Click “Hide updates.”
    • You’ll see a list of available updates. Check the ones you want to block.
    • Click “Next” and let the tool apply your choices.
  4. Restart Your Computer
    • Restart to make sure your changes take effect.

That’s it! Windows won’t automatically reinstall the hidden update unless you unhide it or manually check for it.

How to Unhide an Update

If you want to install the update later (maybe after a fix), just run the troubleshooter again. This time, choose “Show hidden updates” and uncheck the ones you want to install.

Alternative: Pause Updates

If you’re not sure which update is causing problems, you can pause all updates temporarily:

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Click Pause updates for 7 days.
  3. Repeat up to four times for a total pause of 35 days.

This isn’t a long-term fix, but it gives you breathing room.

Final Tips

  • Always back up your files before installing updates.
  • If a device driver is the problem, visit the manufacturer’s site for a working version.
  • Don’t hide security updates unless absolutely necessary.

Wrap Up

Windows 10 updates aren’t perfect, but you’re not powerless. With a simple tool and a few clicks, you can keep buggy updates at bay and maintain a stable system.
