How to Install Latest XUbuntu on Virtualbox
Want a lightweight, user-friendly Linux experience without leaving your current OS? Installing XUbuntu on VirtualBox is the way to go. Here’s how you do it—start to finish, no fluff.
What You’ll Need
- VirtualBox installed on your computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
- XUbuntu ISO (latest version) from the official website
- At least 10GB of free disk space and 2GB RAM (more is better)
Step 1: Download XUbuntu ISO
Go to the XUbuntu download page, grab the latest ISO, and save it somewhere you can find it.
Step 2: Install VirtualBox
If you haven’t already, download and install VirtualBox. It’s free and works on most operating systems.
Step 3: Create a New Virtual Machine
- Open VirtualBox.
- Click New.
- Name your VM (e.g., “XUbuntu”).
- Set Type to Linux and Version to Ubuntu (64-bit).
- Click Next.
Step 4: Set RAM and Hard Disk
- Memory Size: At least 2048MB (2GB), more if you can spare it.
- Hard Disk: Choose “Create a virtual hard disk now.”
- Disk Size: 20GB or more is safe for most users.

Step 5: Mount the XUbuntu ISO
- Select your new VM in VirtualBox.
- Click Settings > Storage.
- Click the empty disc under “Controller: IDE.”
- On the right, click the disc icon and choose Choose a disk file…
- Find and select your XUbuntu ISO.
Step 6: Start the Virtual Machine
- Click Start.
- The VM will boot from the ISO.
- In the menu, choose Install XUbuntu.
Step 7: Install XUbuntu
- Select your language and keyboard layout.
- Choose “Erase disk and install XUbuntu” (this only affects the virtual disk, not your real computer).
- Set your time zone.
- Enter your name, computer name, and password.
- Click Install Now and confirm.
- Wait for the installation to finish (usually 10–20 minutes).
Step 8: Remove ISO and Reboot
- Once the install is done, you’ll be prompted to restart.
- Before restarting, VirtualBox may ask you to remove the installation medium:
- Go to Devices > Optical Drives > Remove disk from virtual drive.
- Hit Enter to reboot.
Step 9: Log In and Enjoy
Your fresh XUbuntu desktop will appear. Log in with your password. You’re done!
Tips for a Smoother Experience
