How to Install Latest XUbuntu on Virtualbox

Want a lightweight, user-friendly Linux experience without leaving your current OS? Installing XUbuntu on VirtualBox is the way to go. Here’s how you do it—start to finish, no fluff.

What You’ll Need

  • VirtualBox installed on your computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
  • XUbuntu ISO (latest version) from the official website
  • At least 10GB of free disk space and 2GB RAM (more is better)

Step 1: Download XUbuntu ISO

Go to the XUbuntu download page, grab the latest ISO, and save it somewhere you can find it.

Step 2: Install VirtualBox

If you haven’t already, download and install VirtualBox. It’s free and works on most operating systems.

Step 3: Create a New Virtual Machine

  1. Open VirtualBox.
  2. Click New.
  3. Name your VM (e.g., “XUbuntu”).
  4. Set Type to Linux and Version to Ubuntu (64-bit).
  5. Click Next.

Step 4: Set RAM and Hard Disk

Step 5: Mount the XUbuntu ISO

  1. Select your new VM in VirtualBox.
  2. Click Settings > Storage.
  3. Click the empty disc under “Controller: IDE.”
  4. On the right, click the disc icon and choose Choose a disk file…
  5. Find and select your XUbuntu ISO.

Step 6: Start the Virtual Machine

  • Click Start.
  • The VM will boot from the ISO.
  • In the menu, choose Install XUbuntu.

Step 7: Install XUbuntu

  • Select your language and keyboard layout.
  • Choose “Erase disk and install XUbuntu” (this only affects the virtual disk, not your real computer).
  • Set your time zone.
  • Enter your name, computer name, and password.
  • Click Install Now and confirm.
  • Wait for the installation to finish (usually 10–20 minutes).

Step 8: Remove ISO and Reboot

  • Once the install is done, you’ll be prompted to restart.
  • Before restarting, VirtualBox may ask you to remove the installation medium:
    • Go to Devices > Optical Drives > Remove disk from virtual drive.
  • Hit Enter to reboot.

Step 9: Log In and Enjoy

Your fresh XUbuntu desktop will appear. Log in with your password. You’re done!

Tips for a Smoother Experience

  • Full Screen Mode: Want Ubuntu or XUbuntu to run full screen? Check out this guide for Windows 10 and 11.
  • Install VirtualBox Guest Additions: For better graphics, clipboard sharing, and full-screen mode, go to the VirtualBox menu: Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD image… and follow the prompts inside XUbuntu.
  • Create Snapshots: Save your progress by making snapshots in VirtualBox before big changes.

Why XUbuntu?

XUbuntu uses the lightweight XFCE desktop, so it runs fast even on older hardware. It’s perfect for testing Linux, development, or just exploring a different OS without risk.
