How to Install Windows Server 2025 on Virtualbox

Running Windows Server 2025 in a virtual machine is a smart way to test features, train, or run apps without touching your main system. If you’re using VirtualBox, follow these steps to get Windows Server 2025 up and running quickly.

What You’ll Need

Step 1: Create a New Virtual Machine

  1. Open VirtualBox and click New.
  2. Enter a name like “Windows Server 2025”.
  3. For Type, select Microsoft Windows.
  4. For Version, choose Windows 2022 (64-bit) (since 2025 might not be listed yet).
  5. Click Next.

Step 2: Assign Memory

  • Set the RAM. 4096 MB (4 GB) is the minimum, but 8 GB is safer if your hardware allows.
  • Click Next.

Step 3: Create a Virtual Hard Disk

  • Select Create a virtual hard disk now and click Create.
  • Pick VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image), click Next.
  • Select Dynamically allocated so it grows as needed.
  • Set the size: 50 GB recommended.
  • Click Create.

Tip: Need to expand your VM’s disk later? Here’s a guide on how to enlarge a virtual machine’s disk in VirtualBox or VMware.

Step 4: Attach the Windows Server 2025 ISO

  1. Select your new VM and click Settings.
  2. Go to the Storage section.
  3. Under Controller: IDE, click the empty disk icon.
  4. On the right, click the disk icon and select Choose a disk file…
  5. Browse and select your Windows Server 2025 ISO.
  6. Click OK to save.

Step 5: Tweak a Few Settings

  • Under System > Processor, assign 2 or more CPUs if possible.
  • In Network, choose Bridged Adapter if you want your VM to be on the same network as your host, or leave as NAT for simple internet access.

Step 6: Start the VM and Install Windows Server 2025

  1. Click Start to boot your VM.
  2. The VM will boot from the ISO. Follow the on-screen instructions:
    • Choose your language and keyboard.
    • Click Install Now.
    • Enter your product key or use the evaluation option.
    • Select the Windows Server 2025 edition you want.
    • Accept the license, choose Custom Install.
    • Pick your virtual hard drive, click Next.

The installation will take several minutes and the VM will reboot a few times.

Step 7: Complete Setup

  • After installation, set up your administrator password.
  • Install VirtualBox Guest Additions (from the VM menu: Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image) for better performance, mouse integration, and screen resizing.
