How to Auto-Delete Emails in Gmail

If your Gmail inbox is a mess, you’re not alone. Newsletters, promotions, and other low-priority emails pile up fast. The good news? Gmail lets you automate cleanup. In this post, I’ll show you how to auto-delete specific emails in Gmail using filters — so you can focus on what actually matters.

Why Auto-Delete Emails?

Not every email deserves your attention. Auto-deleting can:

  • Free up storage space
  • Keep your inbox organized
  • Save you time
  • Help you focus on important messages

What You Can Auto-Delete

You can set Gmail to delete emails automatically based on:

  • Sender (e.g., noreply@website.com)
  • Subject line (e.g., “Your receipt”)
  • Keywords
  • Labels
  • Age of the email
  • And more

How to Auto-Delete Emails in Gmail

1. Open Gmail Settings

Click the gear icon in the top-right corner > “See all settings”.

2. Go to the Filters and Blocked Addresses Tab

Click on the “Filters and Blocked Addresses” tab, then click “Create a new filter.”

3. Set Filter Criteria

Enter the email address, subject, or keyword you want Gmail to target. For example, to delete all emails from a certain sender, enter their email in the “From” field.

Click “Create filter.”

4. Choose “Delete It” Action

On the next screen, check the box for “Delete it.”

(Optional: Also check “Also apply filter to matching conversations” if you want existing emails to be deleted.)

Click “Create filter.”

Done — Gmail will now send matching emails straight to Trash.

How to Auto-Delete Emails After a Certain Time

Want Gmail to delete emails after, say, 30 days?

You can’t do this directly with Gmail filters, but here’s a workaround:

  1. Create a filter to apply a label (e.g., “AutoDelete”) to target emails.
  2. Use Google Apps Script to delete all emails with that label after a certain period. Here’s a simple script you can customize. (Or ask me and I’ll help write one.)

A Word of Caution

Once an email is deleted and cleared from Trash (after 30 days), it’s gone for good. Use auto-delete for low-priority or repetitive emails only.

Final Thoughts

Cleaning up Gmail manually is a time sink. Use filters to keep your inbox light and focused. Set it once, and forget about it — Gmail will take care of the clutter for you.
