How to Back Up (and Restore) Mozilla Firefox Profiles
Your Firefox profile holds everything—bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, settings. If your system crashes or you move to a new computer, losing that profile can be a huge headache. The good news? Backing up and restoring it is easy if you know what you’re doing.
Here’s how to do it the right way.

A Firefox profile is a folder on your computer that stores your personal data. Each user has their own profile, and it lives separately from the Firefox application itself. That means you can uninstall or reinstall Firefox without touching your profile—unless you delete it manually.

- Locate Your Profile Folder
- Open Firefox.
- Click the menu button (three lines in the top-right).
- Go to Help → More Troubleshooting Information.
- Scroll down to Profile Folder and click Open Folder (on Windows/Linux) or Show in Finder (on macOS).
- Close Firefox Once the folder is open, fully close Firefox. You don’t want to copy files while they’re in use.

🔄 How to Restore a Firefox Profile
When you’re ready to restore your profile—whether you’ve reinstalled Firefox, moved to a new machine, or just cleaned up your system—here’s how:
- Install Firefox (if needed)
Make sure Firefox is installed on the target system. - Find the New Profile Folder
- Launch Firefox once so it creates a fresh profile.
- Repeat the steps above to find the new profile folder.
- Replace the New Profile with Your Backup
- Close Firefox completely.
- Delete the contents of the new profile folder.
- Copy everything from your backup profile folder into it.
- (Optional) Use Firefox Profile Manager

, typefirefox.exe -P
and hit Enter (on Windows). - On macOS/Linux, run
