How to Block or Unblock Emails in Gmail on iPhone, Android, and Web
Spam. Annoying newsletters. That one contact who just won’t quit. Blocking emails in Gmail is one of the easiest ways to take back control of your inbox—and yes, you can do it from any device.
In this quick guide, I’ll walk you through how to block and unblock emails in Gmail on iPhone, Android, and the web browser. Whether you want to cut off a spammer or bring back someone you blocked by mistake, it’s all simple.
🔒 How to Block Emails in Gmail
On iPhone (Gmail App)
- Open the Gmail app.
- Find and open the email from the sender you want to block.
- Tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the email (not the app).
- Tap “Block [Sender Name]”.
That’s it. Future emails from them will go straight to your Spam folder.
On Android (Gmail App)
Same steps as iPhone:
- Open the Gmail app and go to the email.
- Tap the three dots (top right of the message).
- Select “Block [Sender Name]”.
Gmail will auto-filter emails from that sender to Spam.
On the Web (Desktop or Laptop)
- Open Gmail.com and log in.
- Open an email from the sender.
- Click the three dots (top right of the email next to the “Reply” arrow).
- Choose “Block [Sender Name]”.
Again, Gmail will move future emails from this sender to Spam.
🔓 How to Unblock Emails in Gmail
On iPhone or Android (Gmail App)
- Find an old email from the sender (check Spam if needed).
- Open the email.
- Tap the three dots (top-right of the email).
- Tap “Unblock [Sender Name]”.
They’ll be allowed back into your inbox like before.
On the Web
- Open Gmail on your browser.
- Click the gear icon (⚙️ top right) > See all settings.
- Go to the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
- Find the email address you want to unblock and click “Unblock” next to it.
You can also search for old emails and unblock them directly from the message view.
Pro Tip: Use Filters to Fine-Tune Your Inbox
Blocking is a blunt tool. If you want more control, consider setting up filters:
- Click the gear icon > See all settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses > Create a new filter.
- You can filter by sender, subject, or even keywords.
- Choose what happens to filtered emails: delete, archive, label, etc.
Final Thoughts
Blocking someone in Gmail is quick and reversible. Whether you’re trying to avoid spam or cut off a persistent sender, Gmail gives you the tools to manage your inbox easily—on your phone or your computer.
