How to Change Default Apps and Settings in Windows 10

Tired of Windows 10 opening photos in the wrong app or launching a browser you don’t use? You’re not alone. Windows 10 assigns default apps for things like web browsing, email, music, and photos. Luckily, changing these defaults is quick and easy.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to take control of your default apps and settings.
Step 1: Open Settings
Click the Start menu and select the Settings icon (the gear symbol), or just press Windows + I on your keyboard.
Step 2: Go to Apps
In the Settings menu, click on Apps. Then, on the left-hand menu, select Default apps.
Step 3: Choose Your Defaults
You’ll see categories like:
- Maps
- Music player
- Photo viewer
- Video player
- Web browser
Click on any category to see a list of available apps. For example, if you want to change your browser, click on the current browser (probably Microsoft Edge) and pick another one like Chrome or Firefox from the list.
Step 4: Set Defaults by File Type or App (Optional)
If you want more control, scroll down and choose:
- “Choose default apps by file type” – This lets you decide which app opens specific file extensions like .jpg or .pdf.
- “Set defaults by app” – Pick an app, then assign it to all compatible file types and protocols.
Step 5: Confirm Changes
Once you’ve selected your preferred apps, you’re done. No need to hit “Save” — Windows saves these changes automatically.
Troubleshooting Tips
- App not showing up? Make sure it’s installed.
- Defaults keep resetting? This sometimes happens after updates. Just go back in and re-select your apps.
- Stuck with Microsoft Edge? Some links from Windows features (like Cortana or News) will still open in Edge by default. That’s a separate issue.
Wrap-Up
Customizing your default apps makes your PC work the way you want. Whether you prefer VLC for videos or Chrome for browsing, it only takes a minute to set things up.
