How to Convert OST to PST Manually

Dealing with an OST file and need a PST? You’re not alone. If you’re looking to back up your mailbox, migrate data, or move emails between systems, converting an OST file (Offline Storage Table) to a PST (Personal Storage Table) is a common task. While there are plenty of paid tools out there, sometimes you just want to do it yourself—manually, and for free.

Here’s exactly how you can convert an OST to PST file manually using Microsoft Outlook. This method works as long as you can still access your emails in Outlook with the original account.

What You Need

  • Microsoft Outlook installed
  • Access to the account that created the OST file

If your OST file is orphaned (meaning you can’t open it in Outlook), this method won’t work. For that, you’ll need a third-party tool.

Method 1: Export Mailbox to PST Using Outlook

  1. Open Outlook
Launch Microsoft Outlook with the profile connected to your OST file.
  2. Go to File > Open & Export > Import/Export
Click on File in the top-left corner. Choose Open & Export, then select Import/Export.
  3. Choose “Export to a file”
In the Import and Export Wizard, select Export to a file and click Next.
  4. Select “Outlook Data File (.pst)”
Choose Outlook Data File (.pst) and click Next.
  5. Pick the Folders to Export
Select the mailbox folders you want to convert to PST. You can include subfolders if needed.
  6. Choose a Save Location
Click Browse to pick where to save your new PST file. Give it a name you’ll remember.
  7. Finish and Export
Hit Finish. If you want, set a password for the PST. Outlook will start exporting.

Method 2: Drag and Drop to a New PST

If you only need a few folders, you can also:

  1. Create a new PST file in Outlook:
File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Data Files > Add...
  2. Drag and drop the emails or folders you want from your OST mailbox to the new PST file.

Limitations of the Manual Method

  • You need access to the original Outlook account.
  • Corrupted or orphaned OST files can’t be converted this way.
  • Attachments and meta-data usually export fine, but check to make sure nothing’s missing.

What If You Can’t Open the OST File?

If you’ve lost access to the mailbox or the OST file is orphaned or corrupt, the manual method won’t help. In that case, look for a reputable OST to PST converter tool—there are free and paid options out there.

The Bottom Line

Manual OST to PST conversion is possible—but only if you can access the mailbox in Outlook.
For quick backups or migrations, Outlook’s export feature does the job. If not, you’ll need to explore software solutions.
