How to Disable Conversation View in Gmail

Gmail’s Conversation View groups related emails into a single thread. While some users find this tidy and efficient, others find it confusing—especially when tracking individual responses in long email chains. If you’re in the second group, good news: turning it off takes less than a minute.

Here’s how to disable Conversation View in Gmail on both desktop and mobile.

On Desktop

  1. Open Gmail in your browser.
  2. Click the gear icon ⚙️ in the upper-right corner to open Quick Settings.
  3. In the Quick Settings panel, scroll down to “Conversation View.”
  4. Select “Conversation view off.”
  5. Gmail will prompt you to reload—click Reload to apply the change.

Done. Your emails will now appear as separate messages rather than grouped threads.

On Mobile (iOS & Android)

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the three horizontal lines (menu icon) in the top left corner.
  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.
  4. Select the Gmail account you want to change.
  5. Scroll to find Conversation view and toggle it off.

That’s it—your mobile inbox will now display emails individually.

Why Turn It Off?

Disabling Conversation View can help you:

  • Avoid missing individual replies in long threads.
  • Track messages chronologically, not grouped.
  • Improve clarity if you’re managing a busy inbox or multiple conversations at once.

It’s especially useful for professionals dealing with high volumes of email, customer support threads, or legal correspondence.

Final Tip

Turning off Conversation View is account-specific. If you manage multiple Gmail accounts, repeat these steps for each one.
