How to Disable Hangouts Chat and Meet in Gmail Sidebar

If you’re not using Google Chat or Google Meet and you’re tired of the extra clutter in your Gmail sidebar, you’re not alone. Many users prefer a cleaner, distraction-free inbox. Thankfully, Google gives you the option to turn off these features. Here’s how to disable both Google Chat (formerly Hangouts) and Google Meet from the Gmail sidebar in just a few steps.

Why Disable Chat and Meet?

  • Cleaner interface: Removing unused tools declutters your Gmail layout.
  • Fewer distractions: No incoming chat pings or Meet suggestions.
  • Better focus: More space for what matters—your emails.

How to Turn Off Google Chat in Gmail

  1. Open Gmail on your desktop browser.
  2. Click the gear icon (⚙️) in the upper right corner and select “See all settings.”
  3. Go to the “Chat and Meet” tab.
  4. Under the Chat section, select “Off.”
  5. Click “Save Changes.”

Gmail will reload, and Chat will be removed from your sidebar.

How to Turn Off Google Meet in Gmail

Still in the “Chat and Meet” tab:

  1. Look for the Meet section.
  2. Select “Hide the Meet section in the main menu.”
  3. Click “Save Changes” (if you haven’t already).

That’s it—Google Meet will no longer appear in your Gmail sidebar.

Want to Reverse It?

If you ever need to use Chat or Meet again, just return to the Chat and Meet tab in Gmail settings and switch them back on. Changes take effect as soon as you save.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to live with tools you don’t use. Customizing Gmail to match your workflow can help you stay focused and more productive. Disabling Chat and Meet is one small step that makes a big difference.
