How to Disable or Enable Location Services in Google Chrome

Location services in Google Chrome let websites access your geographic location. This can improve your browsing experience—for example, by showing local search results or weather updates—but it also raises privacy concerns for some users.

Whether you want to turn it off or make sure it’s on, here’s how to control location access in Chrome, step by step.

How to Disable Location Services in Chrome

If you want to stop websites from knowing where you are, follow these instructions:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Click the three dots in the top-right corner (⋮) and go to Settings.
  3. In the sidebar, click Privacy and security.
  4. Select Site Settings.
  5. Scroll down to Permissions, then click Location.
  6. Under “Default behavior,” select Don’t allow sites to see your location.

That’s it—Chrome will now block all location requests by default.

How to Enable Location Services in Chrome

If you want sites to access your location (for example, for maps or food delivery), do this:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Location.
  3. Under “Default behavior,” choose Sites can ask for your location.

Websites will now be able to request location access. Chrome will always ask you to confirm before sharing it.

How to Control Location Access for Specific Sites

Want more control? You can manage location settings on a site-by-site basis:

  1. Follow the same steps to get to the Location settings page.
  2. Scroll down to Customized behaviors.
  3. You’ll see lists for Allowed to see your location and Not allowed to see your location.
  4. Use the Add button to allow or block a specific website.

Quick Tip: Use the Lock Icon in the Address Bar

You can also manage location access for a specific site while you’re visiting it:

  • Click the lock icon (🔒) in the address bar.
  • Choose Site settings.
  • Find Location in the list and choose Allow or Block.

Final Thoughts

Location services can be helpful, but it’s your call whether to leave them on or not. Chrome gives you easy control over this setting—either globally or per site—so you can customize your privacy exactly the way you want.
