How to Enable Internet Explorer Mode in Edge on Windows 10
If you’re running a legacy web app that only works in Internet Explorer, you’re not alone—and you’re not stuck either. Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 comes with a built-in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) that lets you open those older sites without switching browsers. Here’s how to turn it on.
Why Use Internet Explorer Mode?
IE mode is made for businesses and users who still need Internet Explorer for certain apps or intranet pages. It’s more secure and compatible than using the standalone IE browser, which is officially retired.
Step-by-Step: Enable IE Mode in Microsoft Edge
1. Open Microsoft Edge
Launch the Edge browser. Make sure it’s up to date by clicking the three-dot menu (•••) > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge.
2. Go to Settings
Click the three-dot menu again, then choose Settings.
3. Open Default Browser Settings
In the sidebar, click Default browser.
4. Allow IE Mode
Under Internet Explorer compatibility, look for these options:
- Let Internet Explorer open sites in Microsoft Edge – set to Incompatible sites only or Always (depending on your use case).
- Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode – set to Allow.
After changing this setting, Edge will prompt you to restart the browser. Go ahead and do it.
5. Load a Site in IE Mode
To open a site in IE mode:
- Visit the site in Edge.
- Click the three-dot menu.
- Select Reload in Internet Explorer mode.
Edge will reload the site using IE’s rendering engine, and you’ll see an IE icon in the address bar.
Optional: Add Sites to IE Mode Automatically
If you visit the same legacy site regularly, save time by setting it to always open in IE mode:
- Go to Settings > Default browser.
- Under Internet Explorer mode pages, click Add.
- Enter the URL and set the duration (up to 30 days).
That’s It
IE mode is a solid bridge between old tech and new standards. It helps you stay productive without juggling multiple browsers or risking compatibility issues. Just don’t forget—support for IE mode won’t last forever, so start planning a full transition if you haven’t already.
