How to Enter the BIOS on Your Windows 11 PC

If you need to tweak hardware settings, change your boot order, or troubleshoot a problem, you might need to access your computer’s BIOS or UEFI firmware. The process is a little different in Windows 11 compared to older versions. Here’s how to get into the BIOS on your Windows 11 PC.

What Is the BIOS (or UEFI)?

The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or its modern version, UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), is low-level software that starts up your computer and manages communication between your hardware and your operating system.

Why Access the BIOS?

You might need to enter the BIOS to:

  • Change the boot order (for example, to boot from a USB drive)
  • Enable or disable hardware components
  • Set up a password for extra security
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues

The Fast Way: Use Windows 11’s Advanced Startup

Most Windows 11 PCs boot so quickly that the classic “press F2 or Delete during startup” method can be tough. Here’s the reliable way:

1. Open Windows Settings

Click the Start button and select Settings (the gear icon), or just press Windows + I.

2. Go to Recovery Options

  • In the Settings window, click System on the left.
  • Scroll down and click Recovery.

3. Restart in Advanced Startup

  • Under the Recovery options section, look for Advanced startup.
  • Click Restart now.
  • Your PC will restart and show a blue options screen.

4. Navigate to UEFI Firmware Settings

  • On the blue screen, click Troubleshoot.
  • Click Advanced options.
  • Select UEFI Firmware Settings.
  • Click Restart.

Your PC will reboot straight into the BIOS/UEFI menu.

The Old-School Way: Use a Key at Startup

If you’d rather try the classic approach, restart your PC and immediately (and repeatedly) press the BIOS key for your device. Common keys include:

  • F2
  • Delete
  • Esc
  • F10

Check your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s website if you’re not sure which key to use.

What If You Can’t Get In?

If the BIOS option doesn’t show up, or your PC boots too quickly, the Windows 11 Advanced Startup method is the best bet.

Tip: Make changes carefully in the BIOS. If you’re unsure about a setting, look it up or ask for help.

That’s it! Now you know how to enter the BIOS on your Windows 11 PC. Got questions? Drop them in the comments below.
