How to extract text from images on Windows 11

Extracting text from images used to require fancy software or manual typing, but Windows 11 makes it easy. Whether you want to copy notes from a screenshot or grab a quote from a photo, you can do it in just a few steps. Here’s how.

1. Use Windows PowerToys (With Text Extractor)

Microsoft’s free PowerToys toolkit comes with a powerful feature called Text Extractor. Here’s how to use it:

Step 1: Install PowerToys

  • Go to the official PowerToys page and download the installer.
  • Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: Launch Text Extractor

  • After installation, open PowerToys from the Start Menu.
  • Find “Text Extractor” in the left sidebar and make sure it’s enabled.

Step 3: Extract Text

  • Press Windows + Shift + T on your keyboard.
  • Your screen will dim—drag to select the area of the image with the text you want.
  • Release the mouse. The text will be copied to your clipboard.
  • Paste it anywhere—Notepad, Word, or your browser.

2. Use Snipping Tool with OCR (Newer Windows 11 Updates)

Microsoft is rolling out Optical Character Recognition (OCR) right into the built-in Snipping Tool. If your Snipping Tool is up to date, try this:

Step 1: Open Snipping Tool

  • Press Windows + Shift + S to take a screenshot.

Step 2: Select Your Image Area

  • Select the portion of the screen that contains text.

Step 3: Extract Text

  • After taking the screenshot, click the Text Actions button (if available).
  • Select and copy the text.

Note: If you don’t see the Text Actions button, update your Snipping Tool through the Microsoft Store.

3. Use Microsoft OneNote

OneNote also has built-in OCR:

  • Paste or insert your image into a OneNote page.
  • Right-click the image and select Copy Text from Picture.
  • Paste the copied text wherever you need.

4. Try Online OCR Tools

If you prefer not to install anything, online OCR services can help. Try Online OCR or Google Drive:

  • Upload your image.
  • Follow the prompts to extract and download the text.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use clear, high-resolution images.
  • Avoid handwritten or stylized fonts for better accuracy.
  • Always double-check the extracted text for mistakes.

Summary:
You don’t need expensive software or tedious typing. With PowerToys, the new Snipping Tool, OneNote, or online tools, extracting text from images on Windows 11 is fast and easy. Try these methods and save yourself time on your next project.
