How to Find Your Windows 11 Product Key With 2 Easy Methods
Whether you’re reinstalling Windows or troubleshooting activation issues, having your product key on hand is essential. But where is it? If you’re using Windows 11, it’s usually stored in your system — you just need to know where to look.
Here are two quick and easy ways to find your Windows 11 product key.
Method 1: Use Command Prompt
This method pulls the key directly from your system’s BIOS/UEFI (if pre-installed by the manufacturer).
Steps:
- Press
Windows + S
and type cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- In the Command Prompt window, paste the following command and hit Enter:
wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey
Your 25-character product key will show up right below.
🟢 Works best for: Laptops or desktops that came with Windows pre-installed.
Method 2: Use PowerShell
If Command Prompt isn’t your style, PowerShell can get the job done too.
Steps:
- Press
Windows + X
and choose Windows Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin). - Paste this command:
(Get-WmiObject -query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey
Press Enter. Your product key should appear on the next line.
🟢 Works best for: All Windows 11 systems with a digital license embedded in hardware.
A Few Things to Know
- If you upgraded for free from Windows 10 or have a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, you might not see a key this way — and that’s normal.
- Microsoft will usually activate Windows automatically when you reinstall on the same hardware, as long as you’re signed in.
Final Tip
Save your product key somewhere secure — not in plain text on your desktop. A password manager or a notes app with encryption works great.
