How to Install Latest bazzite Linux in Virtualbox
Bazzite Linux is making waves as a sleek, gaming-focused distro built on Fedora. If you want to test it out without touching your main system, VirtualBox is the way to go. Here’s how you can get the latest Bazzite Linux running inside a virtual machine, fast.
What You’ll Need
- VirtualBox installed on your system (Windows, macOS, or Linux)
- The latest Bazzite Linux ISO
- At least 4GB RAM (8GB+ recommended for better performance)
- 20GB disk space minimum
(Need more space later? Here’s how to enlarge your VM disk in VirtualBox or VMware.)
1. Download Bazzite Linux ISO
- Go to the official Bazzite downloads page.
- Pick the flavor you want (most users should start with the “Desktop” version).
- Download the ISO file. Save it somewhere easy to find.
2. Set Up a New Virtual Machine
- Open VirtualBox and click “New.”
- Name your VM something like “Bazzite.”
- Set Type to “Linux” and Version to “Fedora (64-bit)” or just “Other Linux (64-bit)” if Fedora isn’t listed.
3. Configure VM Settings
- Memory: Give it at least 4096 MB (4GB) RAM. More if you can spare it.
- Processors: 2 CPUs minimum for a smoother experience.
- Hard Disk: Choose “Create a virtual hard disk now.” Set at least 20GB (32GB+ if you plan to install games).
- Display: Go to Settings > Display > Video Memory, max this out (128MB). Enable 3D acceleration if available.
4. Attach the Bazzite ISO
- With the VM selected, click Settings > Storage.
- Under “Controller: IDE,” click the empty disk icon, then click the disk icon on the right and choose “Choose a disk file.”
- Select the Bazzite ISO you downloaded.
5. Boot and Install Bazzite Linux
- Start the VM. It should boot from the Bazzite ISO.
- At the welcome screen, select “Install Bazzite.”
- Follow the on-screen installer:
- Choose language, keyboard, time zone.
- Set your username and password.
- Select your virtual disk for installation.
- Click “Install” and let it run.
6. Final Steps
- Once installed, shut down the VM.
- Go to Settings > Storage and remove the ISO from the virtual drive.
- Start the VM again—now it boots straight into your new Bazzite install.
7. (Optional) Install VirtualBox Guest Additions
For better display scaling and performance:
- With Bazzite running, go to the VirtualBox menu: Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD image.
- Open the terminal in Bazzite and run:
sudo dnf install gcc make perl kernel-devel
- Mount the CD if it doesn’t auto-mount, then run the installer script from the CD.
- Reboot the VM.
