How to install latest SparkyLinux in VirtualBox
If you want a lightweight, fast, and customizable Linux experience, SparkyLinux is a solid choice. Setting it up in VirtualBox is quick and lets you explore without touching your main system. Here’s how to get SparkyLinux running in a virtual machine, from start to finish.
What You Need
- The latest SparkyLinux ISO (Get it here)
- Oracle VirtualBox (Download it here)
- At least 2 GB RAM (more if you can spare it)
- A stable internet connection
Step 1: Download SparkyLinux ISO
Head to the SparkyLinux Download Page and grab the latest ISO file that fits your needs (the “Stable” release is best for most users).
Step 2: Install and Launch VirtualBox
- Install VirtualBox if you haven’t already.
- Open VirtualBox and click New to create a new virtual machine.
Step 3: Create a New Virtual Machine
- Name your VM (e.g., “SparkyLinux”).
- Type: Linux
- Version: Debian (64-bit) (SparkyLinux is based on Debian)
- Click Next.
Assign Memory
- Allocate at least 2048 MB (2 GB) RAM. More is better if you have it.
Create a Virtual Hard Disk
- Choose Create a virtual hard disk now.
- VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) is fine.
- Dynamically allocated saves space.
- Size: 20 GB is plenty for testing. Need a bigger disk later? Here’s a step-by-step guide on enlarging your VirtualBox disk.
Step 4: Attach the SparkyLinux ISO
- With your new VM selected, click Settings > Storage.
- Under “Controller: IDE,” click the empty disk icon.
- On the right, click the disk icon and Choose a disk file.
- Select the SparkyLinux ISO you downloaded.
Step 5: Adjust Other Settings (Optional but Recommended)
- System > Processor: Set CPUs to 2 or more for better performance.
- Display > Video Memory: Max it out (128 MB).
- Network: Leave as default (NAT).
Step 6: Start the VM and Install SparkyLinux
- Click Start to boot from the ISO.
- When the SparkyLinux boot menu appears, select Install SparkyLinux.
- Follow the on-screen installer steps:
- Choose language, keyboard, timezone.
- Set up your username and password.
- Partition the virtual disk (automatic setup is easiest).
Step 7: Remove the ISO and Reboot
- When installation is complete, the VM may prompt for a restart.
- Before restarting, remove the ISO:
- Go to Devices > Optical Drives > Remove disk from virtual drive.
- Now reboot the VM.
Step 8: Log In and Update
- Log in with your username and password.
- Open a terminal and run:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
This keeps your system up to date.
Optional: Make SparkyLinux Full Screen
If your desktop isn’t filling the whole VirtualBox window, you’ll want to install VirtualBox Guest Additions. For more detail (the process is almost identical to Ubuntu), check out this guide on making Ubuntu full screen in VirtualBox.
You’re Ready to Go!
You’ve now got SparkyLinux running in VirtualBox. Explore, test, break, fix—do whatever you want, risk-free.
Tips:
- Use VirtualBox “Guest Additions” for better display and clipboard sharing.
- Take VM snapshots before big changes.
