How to Install Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu on VirtualBox
Want to try Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu without wiping your current system? VirtualBox makes it easy. Here’s how to get Ubuntu 22.10 running in a virtual machine, so you can explore or test it safely.
What You Need
- VirtualBox installed on your PC or Mac (Download VirtualBox)
- Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu ISO file (Direct Download – Ubuntu-22.10-desktop-amd64)
- At least 10 GB of free disk space
- 4 GB RAM or more (recommended)
1. Install VirtualBox
Download and install VirtualBox from the official website. Run through the setup and launch the program.
2. Download the Ubuntu 22.10 ISO
Download the Ubuntu-22.10-desktop-amd64 ISO file here and save it somewhere you can find it.
3. Create a New Virtual Machine
- Open VirtualBox.
- Click “New”.
- Name your VM (e.g., “Ubuntu 22.10”).
- Set Type: Linux
Set Version: Ubuntu (64-bit) - Click Next.
4. Assign Memory (RAM)
- Choose at least 4096 MB (4 GB) if you can.
- Click Next.
5. Create a Virtual Hard Disk
- Select “Create a virtual hard disk now”.
- Click Create.
- Choose VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image), then click Next.
- Choose Dynamically allocated, then click Next.
- Set disk size (at least 20 GB is safe). Click Create.

6. Set the Ubuntu ISO as the Startup Disk
- With your new VM selected, click Settings.
- Go to Storage.
- Under Controller: IDE, click the empty disc icon.
- On the right, click the disc icon and select Choose a disk file…
- Browse and select the Ubuntu 22.10 ISO you downloaded.
Click OK.
7. Start the Virtual Machine
- Select your VM and click Start.
- The VM will boot from the Ubuntu ISO.
8. Install Ubuntu 22.10
You’ll see the Ubuntu installer. Follow these steps:
- Choose your language and click Install Ubuntu.
- Keyboard layout: Pick your layout and click Continue.
- Updates and software: You can choose “Normal installation.”
Tick “Install third-party software” if you want audio/wifi drivers. - Installation type: “Erase disk and install Ubuntu” (this affects only the virtual disk, not your real drive).
- Set your username, computer name, and password.
- Click Continue and wait for the installation to finish.
9. Remove the ISO and Reboot
Once installation completes:
- Ubuntu will prompt you to remove installation media.
- Go to Devices > Optical Drives in the VirtualBox window and uncheck the Ubuntu ISO.
- Click Restart Now.
