How to Purge Crypto From the Brave Browser
Brave Browser comes with built-in crypto features like Brave Rewards, BAT (Basic Attention Token) wallets, and crypto wallets. That’s great for some users—but if you’re not into crypto or want to simplify your browser experience, you might be wondering how to strip all that out.
Here’s how to purge crypto features from Brave and reclaim a cleaner, lighter browser.
1. Turn Off Brave Rewards
Brave Rewards is the program that pays you BAT tokens for seeing privacy-respecting ads. If you’re not interested:
- Click the BAT icon in the address bar or go to
brave://rewards
- Toggle Brave Rewards to Off
- That’s it. Ads stop, and your BAT wallet won’t accumulate more tokens.
2. Disconnect Your Crypto Wallet
Brave now includes a built-in crypto wallet, sometimes automatically enabled. Here’s how to disable or reset it:
- Go to
brave://wallet
- If you’ve connected a wallet, look for Settings or Reset Wallet
- Choose “Reset Wallet” to wipe all local wallet data
- Alternatively, go to
brave://settings
→ Web3 and toggle off any wallet connection settings
Keep in mind: if you’ve stored real assets in the wallet, make sure you’ve backed up your recovery phrase first. Resetting the wallet deletes local keys.
3. Clear All Crypto-Related Data
You can also manually clear crypto-related data just like you’d clear cookies or browsing history:
- Go to
brave://settings/clearBrowserData
- Under the Advanced tab, select:
- Cached images and files
- Site settings (this can include permissions or wallet integrations)
- Hosted app data
- Set the time range to All Time
- Click Clear Data
This clears out lingering web3 data or cached tokens tied to your browsing sessions.
4. Disable Crypto Wallet Autoload
Even if you don’t use it, Brave sometimes launches the wallet in the background. To shut that down:
- Go to
brave://settings/extensions
- Find Crypto Wallets
- Disable or remove the extension (if it’s shown separately)
- Also double-check
brave://settings
→ Web3 → turn off Preferred crypto wallet
5. Block Crypto Ads and Trackers (Extra Credit)
If you really want a crypto-free experience, you can go one step further:
- Use Brave’s built-in Shields to block crypto mining scripts:
- Go to
brave://settings/shields
- Ensure “Block scripts” is enabled (careful—this might break some sites)
- Go to
- You can also install an extension like uBlock Origin for added script filtering
Why You Might Want to Do This
- Privacy – You don’t want wallet connections or tokens being tracked
- Performance – Crypto features can add weight to the browser
- Simplicity – You want a clean, no-frills experience
Brave is still one of the best privacy-first browsers, even without the crypto extras.
Final Thoughts
Brave’s crypto tools are powerful, but they’re not for everyone. If you want to purge them and focus on speed, security, and simplicity, now you’ve got the steps to do it.
