How To See or Block Sensitive Content on Twitter
Twitter lets users share their thoughts in real time—but not all tweets are suitable for everyone. Some tweets are flagged as “sensitive content,” which can include graphic violence, adult themes, or otherwise disturbing material. Depending on your preferences, you might want to see this content or keep it out of sight.
Here’s a simple guide to controlling sensitive content on Twitter.
What Is “Sensitive Content” on Twitter?
Twitter uses algorithms and user reports to mark tweets containing graphic or potentially upsetting images and videos. When you come across these tweets, you’ll often see a warning that says, “This media may contain sensitive material.”
How to See Sensitive Content on Twitter
By default, Twitter hides sensitive content. If you want to see everything—maybe you’re researching, or you just prefer no filters—follow these steps:
On Desktop:
- Log in to Twitter.
- Click More in the sidebar.
- Go to Settings and privacy.
- Click Privacy and safety.
- Select Content you see.
- Check the box next to Display media that may contain sensitive content.
On Mobile App:
Twitter’s app doesn’t always let you change this setting, but you can still:
- Open Twitter and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy and safety.
- Under Content you see, you may be able to toggle the sensitive content setting.
Note: If you can’t find this option in the app, use a browser on your phone or computer.
How to Block Sensitive Content on Twitter
If you want Twitter to hide all sensitive material, make sure the “Display media that may contain sensitive content” option is unchecked. Twitter will then keep this content out of your feed and warn you before displaying anything flagged as sensitive.
Additional Steps
- Mute Keywords: If certain topics or words bother you, go to Settings > Privacy and safety > Mute and block > Muted words and add them to your list.
- Report Tweets: If you see something especially upsetting that Twitter missed, use the Report Tweet option to help improve the platform for everyone.
Why Does This Matter?
Filtering sensitive content helps keep Twitter a safe space for everyone. Some people need warnings for mental health reasons, others want unfiltered access. The important thing is you control your own experience.
Quick Recap
- To see sensitive content, turn on “Display media that may contain sensitive content.”
- To block sensitive content, leave that box unchecked.
- Use the mute and block features for extra control.
Your Twitter, your rules. Take a minute to adjust your settings and browse with confidence.
