How to Set Status Timeout in Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is at the heart of modern work communication. But there’s one thing that can make a difference in how you show up to your colleagues—your status. Setting your Teams status to “Available,” “Busy,” or “Do Not Disturb” is easy, but what if you want to set it for just a certain period? That’s where status timeout comes in.
Here’s how you can set a status timeout in Microsoft Teams:
What is Status Timeout?
A status timeout lets you show a custom status (like “Be Right Back” or “Away”) for a set period. After the time’s up, Teams automatically reverts to your previous status. It’s useful when you’re stepping away for a call, lunch, or need a break without having to remember to reset your status later.
Step-by-Step: Set a Status Timeout in Teams
- Open Microsoft Teams.
Launch the Teams app on your desktop (Windows or Mac) or open the web version. - Click on Your Profile Picture.
You’ll find it at the top right corner of the Teams window. - Set Your Status.
Click on your current status (e.g., “Available,” “Busy”).
From the dropdown, choose your new status:- Available
- Busy
- Do Not Disturb
- Be Right Back
- Appear Away
- Appear Offline
- Set Duration (Status Timeout).
Next to the list of statuses, you’ll see an option called Duration.
Click Duration. - Pick How Long You Want the Status to Last.
You’ll see several preset options, such as:- 30 minutes
- 1 hour
- 2 hours
- Today
- This week
Or, set a custom time.
- Confirm.
Hit Done (or Save). Teams will now show your new status for the set period. - Teams Will Auto-Revert.
Once the time is up, your status will return to what it was before, no manual action needed.
Why Use Status Timeout?
- Prevent interruptions during focused work or meetings.
- Show teammates you’re away, but only temporarily.
- Stay professional—avoid being stuck on “Be Right Back” all day.
Quick Tips
- Mobile: You can also set status timeout in the Teams mobile app. Tap your profile picture, set your status, and look for “Duration.”
- Custom Status Message: You can add a custom message alongside your status for extra clarity (like “On a client call until 3 PM”).
Microsoft Teams is all about making your work life smoother. Setting a status timeout keeps your status accurate, so your team always knows if you’re available—or when you’ll be back.
Try it out and see how it sharpens your workflow.
