How to set up Windows Subsystem for Android on your Windows 11 PC

Want to run Android apps natively on your Windows 11 PC? Thanks to Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Android™ (WSA), it’s now possible—and easier than you might think. Whether you’re a developer, a power user, or just curious, here’s how to get it running in a few straightforward steps.

What is Windows Subsystem for Android?

Windows Subsystem for Android is a feature in Windows 11 that lets you run Android apps right on your desktop, just like you’d run any other Windows app. Microsoft partnered with Amazon to bring the Amazon Appstore to Windows, but you can also sideload APKs if you want more options.

Requirements

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • Windows 11 (Version 21H2 or later): WSA is not available on Windows 10.
  • Microsoft Store (latest version): Update the Microsoft Store app.
  • Virtualization enabled: Check your BIOS/UEFI settings.
  • At least 8 GB RAM: 16 GB is better for smooth performance.
  • An SSD: Strongly recommended for best results.

Step 1: Check for Windows Updates

Go to Settings > Windows Update and make sure your PC is fully updated. This ensures you have all necessary compatibility fixes.

Step 2: Enable Virtualization

Most PCs have this on by default, but it’s good to check:

  1. Restart your PC and enter the BIOS/UEFI menu (usually by pressing F2, Del, or Esc at startup).
  2. Find the Virtualization setting and make sure it’s turned on.
  3. Save changes and boot back into Windows.

Step 3: Install Windows Subsystem for Android and Amazon Appstore

  1. Open the Microsoft Store.
  2. Search for Amazon Appstore.
  3. Click Install. The store will prompt you to install Windows Subsystem for Android if it isn’t already present.
  4. Follow the prompts to complete installation.

Once done, you’ll find the Amazon Appstore and WSA listed in your Start menu.

Step 4: Set Up the Amazon Appstore

  1. Launch the Amazon Appstore from the Start menu.
  2. Sign in with your Amazon account. (If you don’t have one, you can create it during setup.)
  3. Browse, download, and run Android apps right from the store.

Step 5 (Optional): Sideload APKs

If you want to install Android apps that aren’t on the Amazon Appstore:

  1. Enable Developer mode in Windows Subsystem for Android settings.
  2. Download the APK file you want to install.
  3. Use a tool like ADB (Android Debug Bridge) to install the APK.
    • Open a Command Prompt.
    • Type:
      adb install path\to\your.apk
  4. The app will appear in your Start menu like any other app.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • App won’t launch? Make sure Virtualization is enabled and your PC meets system requirements.
  • WSA not available in your region? You may need to change your region in Windows settings to the United States.
  • Store won’t update? Try signing out and back in, or reset the Microsoft Store via settings.

Final Thoughts

Windows Subsystem for Android opens up a whole new world of apps on your PC. With just a few steps, you can blend the best of Android and Windows, all on one machine. Happy app exploring!
