How to Stop Microsoft Edge From Opening Automatically

Microsoft Edge is a solid browser—but not everyone wants it opening on its own. If you’re tired of Edge launching automatically every time you boot up your PC or open certain files, you’re not alone. Here’s how to take control and stop Microsoft Edge from hijacking your workflow.

Why Does Microsoft Edge Keep Opening?

Before we dive into the fix, it helps to understand why Edge keeps popping up:

  • It’s set as the default browser.
  • Windows uses it for certain system features.
  • Background processes and startup tasks may be triggering it.
  • Some updates reset settings without warning.

Let’s walk through how to stop it for good.

1. Disable Edge From Startup

Edge might be launching at startup. Here’s how to stop it:

On Windows 10 or 11:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Go to the Startup tab.
  3. Look for Microsoft Edge.
  4. If it’s there, right-click it and choose Disable.

2. Change Your Default Browser

Windows sometimes opens Edge because it’s still set as the default. Fix that:

  1. Open Settings (Windows key + I).
  2. Go to Apps > Default apps.
  3. Scroll down and click on your current browser (like Chrome or Firefox).
  4. Click each file type (like .html, .htm, etc.) and change it from Edge to your preferred browser.

3. Turn Off Preloading in Edge

Edge can preload in the background to speed up launch time—unfortunately, that means it’s always running.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click the three dots in the top-right corner > Settings.
  3. Go to System and Performance.
  4. Turn off:
    • “Startup boost”
    • “Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed”

4. Stop Windows From Using Edge for Certain Links

Some system links (like search or help results) are hardwired to open in Edge. You can get around this with a tool:

Use a third-party app:

  • EdgeDeflector (no longer updated but works on some systems).
  • MSEdgeRedirect (newer alternative, works for newer Windows builds).

These tools redirect Edge-only links to your default browser.

5. Check Scheduled Tasks

Edge can be launched by scheduled tasks. To check:

  1. Press Windows + R, type taskschd.msc, and hit Enter.
  2. In the left pane, go to Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > EdgeUpdate.
  3. Right-click on any Edge-related tasks and disable them.

Final Tip: Watch for Windows Updates

Sometimes after a major update, Microsoft resets your browser settings. Keep an eye out after updates and double-check that Edge hasn’t been re-enabled or reset as default.

Wrap-Up

Microsoft Edge doesn’t have to run your day. With a few quick changes, you can stop it from opening automatically and keep your PC running the way you want. Whether you’re a Chrome fan or just prefer fewer interruptions, these steps put you back in control.
