How to Turn Off Delivery Optimization on Windows 11
Windows 11 comes with a feature called Delivery Optimization that helps speed up updates by sharing downloaded data with other PCs on your network—or even across the internet. It’s a clever idea, but it can quietly eat into your bandwidth.
If you’re on a metered connection or just want full control over how your system uses data, turning it off might be the right move. Here’s how to do it.
🚫 What is Delivery Optimization?
Before we kill it, here’s what it does:
- Allows your PC to download Windows updates and Microsoft Store apps not just from Microsoft, but from other PCs.
- It also uploads parts of updates from your device to help others get them faster.
That upload part is where it starts to feel like your internet is working for someone else.
🛑 How to Turn It Off
Follow these steps to disable Delivery Optimization on Windows 11:
- Open Settings
PressWindows + I
to open the Settings window. - Go to Windows Update
From the sidebar, click on Windows Update. - Click on Advanced Options
Scroll down and select Advanced options. - Select Delivery Optimization
Under “Additional options,” click Delivery Optimization. - Turn Off ‘Allow downloads from other PCs’
Toggle the switch to Off. That’s it.
⚙️ Optional: Block It Completely with Group Policy or Registry Editor
If you want to lock it down completely, especially on a network with multiple devices, you can go further using Group Policy or Registry tweaks. (Let me know in the comments if you’d like a walkthrough for that too.)
✅ Why Turn It Off?
- You’re on a limited data plan
- You want more control over system activity
- You’re running a low-bandwidth network
- You don’t want your device acting like a mini update server
Final Thoughts
Windows 11 tries to be helpful, but not every user wants to share their connection. Disabling Delivery Optimization is a quick way to stop unnecessary data sharing and get your bandwidth back.
