How to Unsend an Email
We’ve all been there. You hit “Send” on an email, and the regret sets in immediately—wrong recipient, missing attachment, or maybe something you just shouldn’t have said. Good news: unsending an email is possible. But you need to act fast, and not all email services offer the same options.
Here’s how to take that message back—if you move quickly enough.
1. Gmail: Use “Undo Send”
Gmail gives you a built-in grace period. Here’s how it works:
How to Set It Up:
- Go to Settings (gear icon) → See all settings.
- Under the General tab, find Undo Send.
- Set the cancellation period (5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds).
How to Use It:
After sending an email, a small popup appears at the bottom-left corner of your screen saying “Message sent. Undo / View message”. Click Undo within the time limit, and the email will bounce back to draft form.
Important: If you miss the window, the email is gone.
2. Outlook (Desktop + Web)
Outlook has a “Recall” feature, but it only works under certain conditions—and only if you’re using Microsoft Exchange (i.e., most work or school accounts).
How to Recall in Outlook (Windows desktop):
- Open Sent Items.
- Double-click the email to open it.
- Go to Message > Actions > Recall This Message.
- Choose:
- Delete unread copies of this message
- Or Replace with a new message
Limits:
- Only works if the recipient is in the same organization and using Outlook.
- Doesn’t work if the email was already opened.
Outlook Web App (OWA) doesn’t currently support recall.
3. Apple Mail (macOS Ventura and later)
Apple added Undo Send starting with macOS Ventura.
How to Use It:
After sending, you’ll see an Undo Send option in the lower-left of your Mail window—for about 10 seconds. Click it to pull back the message.
To adjust the undo time:
- Go to Mail > Settings > Composing.
- Look for Undo Send Delay and choose between 10, 20, or 30 seconds.
4. Yahoo Mail and Others: You’re Out of Luck
Unfortunately, Yahoo Mail, AOL, and many other free services don’t offer any kind of email recall or undo send. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Pro Tips to Avoid Needing “Undo”
- Use Delay Send: Set your email client to delay all sends by 30–60 seconds. It gives you a buffer to catch errors.
- Proofread twice: Check recipients, tone, and attachments before sending.
- Save drafts: For sensitive or emotional emails, sleep on it.
Final Word
Undoing an email isn’t always possible, but knowing how your email service works can save you from major headaches. Set up your settings now—before you actually need them. Because when it comes to email mistakes, every second counts.
