Tab Groups Is Chrome’s Best New Feature in Years, and Here’s How to Use It

If your Chrome browser is constantly buried in a jungle of open tabs, you’re not alone. Google finally did something about it — and it’s a game changer.

Tab Groups is Chrome’s best feature in years. It’s built right into the browser, it’s fast, and it finally makes managing dozens of tabs actually usable.

Here’s what makes Tab Groups so good — and how to start using it like a pro.

🧠 What Are Tab Groups?

Tab Groups let you organize your tabs into labeled, color-coded clusters. Think of it as folders for your tabs — without needing a new browser or third-party extension.

You can group tabs by:

  • Project
  • Topic
  • Task (e.g. “Research,” “To Read,” “Work”)
  • Whatever makes sense for how you browse

🚀 Why Tab Groups Are a Big Deal

Here’s why this isn’t just another gimmick:

  • Collapse and expand groups to instantly clean up clutter
  • Color-code to spot what’s what at a glance
  • Drag and drop tabs into or between groups
  • Persistent across sessions — they stay after you close and reopen Chrome
  • No extension required — it’s native, stable, and free

Whether you’re working, studying, planning a trip, or just trying to keep things organized, Tab Groups make multitasking manageable again.

🛠 How to Use Tab Groups in Chrome

✅ Step 1: Create a Tab Group

  1. Right-click on a tab
  2. Select “Add tab to new group”
  3. Give your group a name and choose a color

That tab is now grouped. You’ll see a colored label to the left of it.

✅ Step 2: Add More Tabs to the Group

  • Right-click any tab
  • Choose “Add tab to group”
  • Select the group you just created

You can also drag and drop tabs directly into a group.

✅ Step 3: Collapse or Expand the Group

Click the colored label (name of the group) to collapse all tabs in that group into a single tab-like icon.

Click it again to expand.

✅ Step 4: Edit or Remove a Group

  • Right-click the group label to rename, change color, or ungroup
  • You can also close all tabs in a group at once

💡 Pro Tips

  • Use groups like a to-do list — group tabs you’re not using right now, and collapse them
  • For long research sessions, create a new group and dump everything into it
  • Combine Tab Groups with Tab Search (the dropdown arrow in the top bar) to find tabs even faster
  • Use different colors for personal vs. work tabs to instantly spot the difference

📱 Does It Work on Mobile?

Yes — Tab Groups are also available in Chrome for Android, but the experience is more limited. You can group tabs and access them from the tab switcher view. iOS support is more limited at the moment.

Final Thoughts

If you haven’t tried Chrome’s Tab Groups yet, you’re missing out. This feature turns chaotic browsing into something actually manageable — and it’s already built into your browser.

Give it five minutes, and you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.
