Top 2 Ways to Backup Chrome Bookmarks and Passwords

Keeping your Chrome bookmarks and passwords backed up is one of those simple habits that can save you a lot of frustration. Whether you’re switching devices, doing a clean reinstall, or just playing it safe, here are the two best ways to back up your data from Google Chrome.

1. Use Your Google Account Sync

The easiest and most reliable way to back up bookmarks and passwords.

Chrome’s built-in sync feature is designed to keep your data safe across devices. All you need is a Google account.

How to turn on sync:

  1. Open Chrome and click on your profile icon (top right).
  2. Click “Turn on sync” or “Manage your Google Account.”
  3. Sign in and make sure “Sync everything” is enabled — or go into “Sync settings” to choose just Bookmarks and Passwords.
  4. That’s it. Your data is now saved to your Google account and can be restored on any Chrome browser you log into.

Bonus Tip: You can view and manage your saved passwords anytime at passwords.google.com.

2. Manual Export (For Offline Backup or Extra Security)

If you want a physical copy of your bookmarks and passwords — or prefer not to rely solely on Google — you can export them.

Export Bookmarks:

  1. In Chrome, click the three dots (top right) > Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager.
  2. Click the three dots inside the manager > Export bookmarks.
  3. Save the .html file somewhere safe — like an external drive or cloud storage.

You can import this file later on any browser that supports bookmarks.

Export Passwords:

  1. Go to chrome://settings/passwords or click the key icon in settings.
  2. Click the three dots next to “Saved Passwords” > Export passwords.
  3. Confirm with your system login and save the .csv file.

Important: This file is not encrypted — treat it like sensitive data. Store it securely and delete it when you’re done.

Final Thoughts

Using both methods — Google Sync for convenience, and manual export for control — gives you full coverage. Whether you’re moving to a new device or just backing up for peace of mind, these two steps take less than 10 minutes and can save you hours later.
