Ways to Enable or Disable Transparency Effects in Windows 10 and Windows 11

Transparency effects are one of those subtle design touches that make the Windows interface feel more modern. They add a glass-like blur to backgrounds in elements like the Start Menu, Taskbar, and some app windows. But while they can look slick, they may also affect performance—especially on older or lower-end systems.

Whether you’re trying to streamline your setup for speed or customize the aesthetic, here’s how to easily enable or disable transparency effects in both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

🪟 For Windows 10 Users

Enable or Disable Transparency via Settings

  1. Right-click on the Desktop and choose Personalize.
  2. In the left-hand menu, click Colors.
  3. Scroll down until you see Transparency effects.
  4. Toggle the switch On or Off depending on your preference.

That’s it. The change takes effect immediately—no restart required.

Alternative Method via Registry Editor (Advanced)

⚠️ Caution: Editing the registry can affect system stability. Proceed only if you’re comfortable doing so.

  1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize
  3. Find the value named EnableTransparency.
  4. Double-click it and set the value to:
    • 1 to enable transparency
    • 0 to disable transparency
  5. Restart your computer to apply changes.

🪟 For Windows 11 Users

The steps are slightly different but just as easy.

Enable or Disable Transparency via Settings

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Personalization > Colors.
  3. Scroll to Transparency effects.
  4. Toggle it On or Off as needed.

Windows 11 will immediately reflect the change in the UI—Start Menu, Taskbar, etc.

Via Registry Editor (Advanced)

The registry key is the same as in Windows 10:

  1. Open Registry Editor (regedit).
  2. Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize
  3. Modify EnableTransparency as described above.
  4. Reboot to apply.
